June 9th Fundraiser - a Huge Success
Large Public Showing of Support for Albany County DA David Soares
We received broad support from a coalition of law enforcement, state and local elected officials from the Democratic, Working Families and Independence parties, community groups, and Capital District labor leaders at a fundraiser at Taste restaurant in Albany last night.
Officials and leaders came together to celebrate District Attorney Soares’ record of equal justice for all residents of Albany County. During his first two terms, DA Soares has demonstrated that justice works when evenly applied. His Public Integrity Unit, for example, has achieved groundbreaking convictions of elected officials such as former Comptroller Alan Hevesi and former state health commissioner Antonia Novello. His record of prosecuting both violent offenders and economic criminals is a strength of his tenure.
"It was the frustration of one that mobilized the energy of hundreds, which in turn channeled the voices of thousands. Those voices – which the political establishment and the legal elites ignored - know that this office belongs to the people. In 2012, we will remind them once again," DA Soares said.
Albany County Sheriff James Campbell spoke at the event. "The people of Albany and the members of Albany County law enforcement are fortunate to have such a dedicated and visionary leader fighting the good fight - the fight for equal justice for all," Sheriff Campbell said. "I hope that the collaboration David has forged with the Albany County Sheriff's Department will be continued by my successor."
"In 2004 and 2008, David Soares ran as the candidate for change. In 2012, David will run as the candidate for change that works," Karen Scharff, co-chair of the Working Families Party and executive director of Citizen Action of New York, said at the event. "As promised, David has come through for the working families of Albany County. He has successfully prosecuted corrupt politicians who always got a pass in the old days. He has also taken a smart, effective approach to locking up violent criminals, not low-level, non-violent drug offenders."
Teamsters Local 294 President John Bulgaro also attended. "David Soares wins union support hands-down. We are here to support David tonight because of his track record of protecting the integrity of workers’ pensions, enforcing prevailing wage laws, and defending workplace health and safety standards. We believe he is by far the best person for the job, for union members and for our community," Mr. Bulgaro said.
